ERAS Updates: What’s New for 2017

Parts of the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) are changing in 2017.

Changes and enhancement to the ERAS are coming in 2017—be prepared!

The 2017 season of the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) is upon us. As you tackle the residency application process, you’ll want to note several changes and enhancements that the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has made to the ERAS for 2017.

AAMC introduces changes to the ERAS application date

You can now apply on September 6 and get a nine-day head start before program directors access and view your application and supporting documents. You don’t have to apply on September 6, but it’s certainly a way for you to beat the rush and hopefully avoid the technical problems and slow response times that sometimes plague the September 15 application date. (The dates for application and release for DO programs is July 6 and July 15.)

The way it will work is that applications submitted before September 15 will be held. Then all the applications will be released at one time. This way, it will still appear to program directors that all applications were submitted at the same time.

Note that, once submitted and paid for, applications can’t be withdrawn even during the nine-day holding period.

Changes to the ERAS personal statement

You can now do more to customize your personal statement. Minimal formatting functions like indenting and bolding have been added to the personal statement entry window. However, you won’t be able to change font size.

Personal statements will also be standardized so you can see what your statement looks like to the program directors when they’re viewing it. It will now be especially easy to see how many pages your personal statement uses.

Changes to the ERAS Message Center

The ERAS Message Center now allows applicants to create folders, move items, and sort their messages. This should make it easier to manage the flow of information. Keep in mind that programs aren’t required to send messages through the ERAS.

Change to the ERAS interview invite calendar

The improvement to the calendar makes it easier for programs to offer a candidate multiple possible interview dates. It will also be easier for you to pick one date or go on the waitlist. You’ll want to note that programs aren’t required to send interview invites through the ERAS.

One more change: Residency application numbers are growing

The number of applications from 2015 to 2016 grew by 10 percent. That means, on average, each US-med and IMG applicant applied to 1.1 times as many programs as compared to last year’s applicants. The ERAS processed a total of 4 million applications from 45,000 students who applied to 33,000 programs. Numbers like that mean it’s more important than ever to stand out in the residency application process.
